Untitled sculptural installation collaboration with Brazilian-Okinawan artist, Luciyana Miyuki | 2000g cotton, 50kilos (110lbs) salt | Manchester, United Kingdom | 2016.
Review: "On entering the gallery you first notice Nica Aquino and Luciana Miyuki’s piece which dominates the room and divides the gallery into two sections by using a strip of salt and water along the floor. The piece conveys a sense of fragility to it in its fibrous appearance in contrast to the rigid pillar from which it emanates. The piece explores interiors and how you interact with the space, questioning our existence within them."

"Like many artists that harness the power of the written word to add impact to their practice, such as, Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer, Aquino appropriates text to deepen her visual message. Historical text from U.S. Senator Albert Beveridge declaring his support for the annexation of the Philippines is overlaid on a childhood image of the artist. The villainous qualities of “savages” that Beveridge bestows on the Philippine people with his racist rhetoric lays emblazon over the sparkling smile of an innocent child." -Images of Power Curatorial Team |

"Atang: Saan Kayo Nga Nalipatan" (English - "Offering: You Are Not Forgotten") | mixed media altar installation |
Los Angeles, California | 2017.
In June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte became the new president of the Philippines. Since his presidency, he has enforced extrajudicial killings, or a "War on Drugs," resulting in the loss of thousands of innocent Filipinxs across the islands. These laws are meant to exterminate anyone accused of using or selling drugs, whether proof is provided or not.
President Duterte gave the police and vigilantes the green light to kill anyone they suspected of drug activity. On 17th August, 2016, I woke up to a series of texts from one of my siblings, letting me know that our older brother had been followed and killed as a result Duterte's "War on Drugs." A little over the one year anniversary of my brother's transition to the spirit world, I offer this atang to honour his life and the thousands of innocent Filipinxs who have died in this drastic violation of human rights. Included with the atang is an image of the scene where my brother was killed, layered with the text conversation I woke up to with the tragic news. This is displayed on a television monitor to emulate the CCTV footage the image was captured on.
Exhibited at Avenue 50 Studio - Highland Park, California - 2017.
